Our History

Wits RHI is one of the largest research Institutes of the University of the Witwatersrand and part of the Faculty of Health Sciences. Established in 1994 as the Reproductive Health Research Unit (RHRU), the Institute was formed on 1 October 2010 through a merger with Enhancing Children s HIV Outcomes (ECHO).

Professor Rees Chairs WHO Expert Meeting on Ebola Vaccine

Professor Helen Rees, Executive Director of Wits RHI and world-renowned vaccinologist, last week chaired an expert meeting on Ebola vaccines in Geneva. It appears that the two vaccines being considered for Ebola are safe to be tested on healthy human volunteers, and trials are due to start soon.
