AVIWE is a Xhosa phrase which means ‘They have been heard’.
The goal of the AVIWE programme is to provide technical assistance at the national and provincial levels to strengthen and standardise multi-sectoral
programming for improved HIV prevention, care, and treatment outcomes for adolescent girls and young women (AGYW). In doing this, AVIWE seeks to
facilitate the development of leadership capacity, develop and share tools, and resources to enable an effective and sustained response.
The program supports the Department of Health (DOH) and more recently the Department of Basic Education (DBE) at national and provincial
levels through the following four strategies:
