Our History

Wits RHI is one of the largest research Institutes of the University of the Witwatersrand and part of the Faculty of Health Sciences. Established in 1994 as the Reproductive Health Research Unit (RHRU), the Institute was formed on 1 October 2010 through a merger with Enhancing Children s HIV Outcomes (ECHO).

Results of FACTS 001 study announced at CROI

Seattle (24 February 2015) – Findings of a major study into the use of a vaginal gel containing the antiretroviral drug, tenofovir, in preventing HIV among young South African women, known as FACTS 001, were reported at the annual Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections (CROI) in Seattle, Washington earlier today (Tuesday 24 February).
